Travel Update: What You Need to Know About Europe’s New Entry/Exit System (EES)
Europe is updating the way international travelers enter and exit its borders, and if you’re planning a trip in 2025 or 2026, it’s important to understand what’s changing. The European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) is designed to make border crossings more secure, efficient, and consistent across Europe’s most popular destinations.
At Cruise Planners – Global Wanders Unlimited, we’re committed to keeping our travelers informed so you can plan with confidence.

What Is the Entry/Exit System (EES)?
The Entry/Exit System, or EES, is a new electronic border control system being introduced across the Schengen Area — the group of 29 European countries that share open internal borders for travel.
Instead of having your passport manually stamped, border agents will now collect and record your information digitally. On arrival, you’ll have your passport scanned, a photo taken, and in some cases, fingerprints collected.
This process replaces the old stamp system with a more accurate digital record of when and where travelers enter or exit Europe.
The Schengen Area: A Quick Overview
The Schengen Area includes 29 European countries that operate as one travel zone, allowing people to move freely between member states without internal border checks.
Countries like France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Germany, and the Netherlands are part of the Schengen Area. Non-EU members such as Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland also participate.
A few EU countries, including Ireland, are not yet part of Schengen, while others — Cyprus, Bulgaria, and Romania — are in the process of joining.

Who Will It Affect?
The EES applies to non-EU travelers visiting Europe for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
That includes travelers from:
-
The United States
-
The United Kingdom
-
Canada
-
Australia
and other visa-exempt countries.
EU citizens, long-term residents, and travelers with long-stay visas are not affected by this change.

When Will It Start?
The system officially began rolling out in October 2025, with full implementation expected by spring 2026. Because the rollout is phased, some airports and border points will begin using EES before others.
During this transition, travelers may encounter both systems — some borders still stamping passports while others have moved to full digital registration.

What Travelers Can Expect
When you arrive at a Schengen border — whether by air, sea, or land — here’s what the process will look like:
-
Your passport will be scanned into the digital system.
-
A facial photo will be taken.
-
Fingerprints may be required for some travelers.
-
Your entry and exit dates will be recorded automatically.
Your first trip under the new system may take a few extra minutes while your information is registered. After that, re-entry will be faster, with facial recognition used for verification.
Why This Change Matters
The EES automatically tracks how long visitors stay within the Schengen Area, helping enforce the 90 days in any 180-day period rule. This means the system will make it easier to confirm that travelers are staying within their permitted time limits.
It also enhances border security and ensures a more consistent process across all Schengen countries.

Tips for a Smooth Travel Experience
-
Allow extra time at the airport or port, especially if this is your first visit after EES implementation.
-
Check your passport validity — it should be in good condition and valid for at least six months beyond your trip.
-
Understand the 90/180 rule. The EES will automatically count your days in the Schengen Area, so plan your itinerary accordingly.
-
Carry your travel documentation. EES registration doesn’t replace other entry requirements like proof of lodging, return ticket, or travel insurance.
-
Don’t confuse EES with ETIAS. ETIAS is a separate pre-travel authorization system that will launch later.
